Balancing the books and expectations – Todd Pollard’s plunge into the training ranks

January 22, 2026

Todd Pollard’s first public step into the world of training racehorses under his own name has been one of caution. His next will represent a homecoming, coupled with an ambition to have a runner in New Zealand’s richest race for two-year-olds in 2027.

In between the extravaganza of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and the celebration of New Zealand Bloodstock’s 100th National Yearling Sale at Karaka, the realities of building a stable from scratch are never far away.

January 8, 2026

Formerly the racing manager for Stephen Marsh and assistant trainer to Annabel Archibald, Kiwi expat Todd Pollard has announced he has obtained his trainers' licence and will go out on his own in February. Pollard sat down with TTR to reflect on the journey that has led him to this new venture.

The best trainers are mentored by top trainers on their way up, and Todd Pollard has been mentored by several of those on either side of the Tasman. Experiences garnered across the stables of Graham Richardson, Stephen Marsh, Annabel Archibald, and two years with Godolphin Flying Start have set the Kiwi expat to take the next step and launch his own training operation.,,

January 8, 2026

The Queensland training ranks will welcome a new name in February, with former Annabel and Rob Archibald assistant trainer Todd Pollard set to embark on his own training career.

Born and raised in Matamata, Pollard’s interest in racing was sparked early through family involvement, with an aunt breeding and racing several horses, including Taranaki Breeders (Evergreen) Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Rosetti Bay (Pins)…..
